I feel i have settled in extremely well at my first week of my new job. I love the people, the environment, the work we do … it’s fun and enjoyable, challenging, inspiring, makes me feel worthwhile. Most of the week i have been learning and paring with others, watching what they do, asking questions [...]

Beryl provides neat 3D desktop features, and Emerald is a beautiful window decorator.
Acknowledgement: this information came from debianadmin.com. I am reproducing it here for two reasons. Firstly, it’s nice to have my ultimate personal Debian setup guide all in one place. Secondly, the page i got it from has so-called “smart-quotes” which would confuse the [...]

I got most of this information from the Debian wiki but it is a little complicated, so here’s a summary of the way it worked for me. This method involves a re-build of the kernel, but it’s not as scary as it sounds.

I don’t know why i always end up doing these things on Friday evenings.
This is nominally part of my ongoing series of how to get my perfect Debian set-up, just so that if i ever have to reinstall again i’ll know how to get my computer back the way i like it.

We have a strange, slightly unhealthy love of guids here. The following is quite a normal geeky conversation in our department:
Well what you do is you look in md_attribute_template.
What was the guid, do you remember?
Was it B869B370 …?
E2BF …?
We have developed this (utterly false) notion of a guid ‘mountain’ and we talk of them being [...]

I made a video of the Linux software i use, in response to a colleague who claimed that Linux is difficult to use. I prove that i have everything i need - and more - it’s easy to use, and i haven’t had to pay a penny for any of it!
The video also shows some [...]

I got my computer fixed last night! My wonderfully helpful work colleague came over to help me get it all wired up back together in the new case. It was absolutely the power supply that was broken. We plugged it into the new case and it just worked straight away. Hooray! The new PSU is [...]

I sometimes enjoy checking the spam for comments that Akismet has cast aside for me. There is a kind of comment that takes such a predictable form it is almost like a Haiku. It goes:
{compliment}.
{assurance of trust}..
{greeting}
The two dots on the second line are very important. There are always two dots on the second line. [...]

Now it turns out the PSU to the computer is a smaller size than standard. Anyone know where i can get one this size?
It also needs to fulfil these requirements:
400W
24 pin
SATA power supply
PCI-express power
Fun fun fun …!!
And i don’t even know if it’s definitely the PSU that’s bust …!
